The Owl Service nascono nell’estate del 2006 per merito di Steven Collins, che sin dagli esordi si pone l’obiettivo di evocare le magiche atmosfere del folk britannico, senza in questo tralasciare le oniriche colonne sonore dei commercials e delle serie televisive degli anni 60 e 70.
Steven Collins è il leader indiscusso del gruppo e assieme ad un manipolo di fidi collaboratori incide "A Garland Of Song" a cavallo tra il dicembre del 2006 ed il giungo del 2007, quasi integralmente in un attrezzatissimo studio casalingo. Un esordio, in uscita per Southern Records, che si consuma tra misteriose e grumose ballate, appunti di rock acido e voluminose schermaglie garage. Elementi che in realtà non identificano il suono del gruppo come retrogrado, tant’è che questo approccio alla tradizione è tra i più vitali ed originali degli ultimi 30 anni.
In questo è apprezzabile la tenuta di Steven, tra i pochi autori contemporanei inglesi a prestare reale attenzione ai canoni sonori di un tempo, senza perdere un briciolo di spirito innovativo. Delizioso, notturno, stregato, sono gli attributi che bene potrebbero descrivere questo debutto lungo che in pieno vuole sposare l’operato dei grandi del passato, dai Fairport Convention ai Pentangle passando per Anne Briggs e Mellow Candle.
